San Diego – the coastal gem of Southern California, without the hustle and bustle of LA, is a hotspot for families. There’s more to do than we can possibly explain in one article – but we’ll try to note our favorites.

Even locals feel like they could easily spend a day playing tourist. Want to do the same? Read our tips on the best things to do in San Diego below.

Spend a Whole Day in Balboa Park

Do you love to be outside? Well maybe you don’t where you live right now, but you will in San Diego! The weather there will make you never want to leave.

And where better to experience the ocean breeze and the sun at the same time than Balboa park? Some call it the Central Park of San Diego.

It has gardens, it has hiking trails, it has museums. Do you like cacti? There’s an entire garden dedicated to the spiky beauty.

And that’s not all. When you need a break from the sun, you can go into one of the four museums that all are in or around the park.

There’s the San Diego Museum of art, the Museum of Man, the Museum of Photographic Arts and the Natural History Museum. The last one is better for kids – though you can take them to all four.

Bring a picnic or eat in one of the museum cafes. It’s bound to be a gorgeous day. And if you have little ones, this day of walking and exploring will make them sleep well through the night.

Go to the Farmers Market

Need some food for that picnic in the park you’re planning? Why not head to Ocean Beach and pick up some local foods at the farmers market? They have everything you can imagine.

And we mean everything. Need to do a little yoga right next to where you buy goat cheese? Of course, you can do that! This is California.

Take (Everyone) Out to a Ball Game

The famous San Diego Padres play in Petco Park, which unfortunately does not house pets. But you do have some of the best stadium food in all the land.

You don’t have to settle for hot dogs and hamburgers. The park contracts out local restaurants who fill the stands with their version of game fare.

Go Surfing or Hiking

There are tons of beaches in San Diego. Some think the best beach to surf is Black’s Beach, However, that is a nude beach, so be careful who you bring.

There are other beaches too, like Coronado Beach or Windansea. But these beaches aren’t like the groomed ones you see in Florida. They’re cliff-clad and wild, which is just a different kind of beautiful.
